WPR's The New Rules: A Foreign Policy Wish List for 2012
Monday, January 2, 2012 at 2:01PM
Last year was a tough one in terms of global economics, humanitarian disasters and political leadership among the world's great powers. But it was also the year of the glorious Arab Spring and hints of similar developments in Myanmar, Russia and Ethiopia. So while the year's "fundamentals," as the economists like to say, weren't so good, it left us with plenty to be grateful for as globalization continues to awaken the desire of individuals for freedom the world over. Keeping all that in mind, here is my foreign policy wish list for 2012.

"Think globally, act locally." That's what the bumper sticker says. "Act locally"...that's the sticky part. We still have "Hermit Kingdoms" and dictators. Still have tribes and murderous religious fanatics. Yet if we go back to 1812, just two hundred years, a mere fraction of a second in the earth's timeline, we see very, very different world. No planes, no trains, no cars, no telephones, no heart transplants, no antibiotics, no television, no internet, no Super Bowl.
Horses and four legged animals were everywhere. Most human's lived in agrarian communities. Ships were powered by the wind and women were property. But...change was coming. The brilliant men that founded our country had lit a slow burning fire. Lit that fire with an idea. An idea that men could govern themselves. If the human condition improves as much in the next two hundred years, what an amazing world that will be.
Knowing your optimism & reverse engineering your election wish list, I believe we may be more in sync this election year.
