Real power is demand

POST: Why Not Empower Iranian Entrepreneurs?, By Ben Katcher, The Washington Note, Sep 16 2008

Brilliant little bit. Any time in Dubai makes this argument self-evident. Ditto, quite frankly, for Kurdish Iraq.

As always, real power is demand, not supply, within globalization, ergo real weakness is unmet demand.

I have also spent a lot of time in Dubai. While I agree, you can't help but be impressed by the cluster around Sheikh Zayed Road, it's also hard to avoid the ongoing labor unrest in the camps that makes the growth they are doing possible.

Dubai is pretty liberal for the region, but even they have trouble accepting raising pay much, or improving working conditions (or for that matter cutting the rug out from under the recruiters who abuse the system).

At what point do you see this becoming a probem, if ever?

the potentical for growth in Iran is enormous, and there is no shortage of brilliant minds either.in fact,i was recently in Iran for 2 months, and was supprised about how much people think in term ofpolitics rather than religious. they are some what putting up with thisbackwarded regime, mainly in my oppinion, because, they fear the outside threat to thier indepentent, and they see the Iraq, and don'twant end up like them.they have a very strong pro-west feeling ina sense, they are for all the technologies and democracy in the west, but they have strong nationalistic view, and they don't want to go back to the shah's period, where America had many militerey bases, the country's army was run by US militerey advisers and they don'twant leaders like in Egypt,Gordan,Saudia,or Pakistan, where they have to do what they are told by US.unfortunatly,US policies has been toward that end,and that's why we see US failing in the region, and the balance is tilted against these policies. it is sad that, people like Cheny,Paulson,.... run US policies, where as we should bewinning these people heart & mind,by building thier infrastructures, and make a different in thier lives. But,yet again, they wonder, why West should help them, when they see west struggling to help thierown self.
