Some solid common sense from Gates: detach the troops-level argument from the withdrawal argument on Afghanistan. They are not the same thing.

Politicians have always abandoned these situations as Politics allowed, because once the urgency and headlines cease, they have no reason to continue involvement . .

And I don't expect either this Administration or Congress to be any different . .
