Another big, super-deep Gulf of Mexico oil find

TECHNOLOGY: "BP finds huge oil field deep beneath the Gulf of Mexico: If it's a true 'giant,' it could have 500 million barrels," by Julie Schmit, USA Today, 3 September 2009.

The depth is a stunning 35,000 feet.

Technology + price + demand.

Enough recoverable oil to supply US demand for 25 days. These deep underwater fields will become increasingly attractive as the price of oil creeps up. Lets hope a cleaner alternative energy breakthrough occurs soon, meanwhile, nice to know oil has our back.

Coming soon to a web page near you ... picture of flying saucer (from old sci-fi show) sipping oil to take home.

Yes, there are untapped deep, very deep oil deposts, but people should not be lulled into a false sense of security. Oil really is a finite resource and it will eventually dry up. It should be remembered that it took millions of years to produce the coal, oil and gas deposits, and I suppose it might be that millions of years from now large trash/garbage dumps may produce new fuel deposits. The emphasis is on "may". I don't know that environmental conditions are right and none of us will be around to find out. Our best bet--alternative, renewable energy sources plus petroleum substitutes.
