China has engineers, we have lawyers

INTERNATIONAL: "Selection bias in politics: There was a lawyer, an engineer and a politician . . .; Why do professional paths to the top vary so much?" The Economist, 18 April 2009.

When it comes to politicians, China--for now--draws heavily on engineers, giving you a sense of their technocratic hubris. America likes lawyers by a long shot, reflecting our obsession with rules.

Lawyers become politicians in the US largely as a result of boredom with their chosen profession. Just ask any of them?
