I first read Barnett in 2006. His 2005 Esquire article "The Chinese are our friends" gave me my first post-cold war glimpse of the strategic importance of China to our future, and lead to my continuing focus on preparing our next generations for this future by expanding Mandarin and study abroad in China programs.

Truly an example of Tom's dictum to get your own foreign policy. Thanks for the post, Dave!

My copy arrived from Amazon last night. I got the kid's fed, did homework with the oldest, read to the youngest and convinced my wife that the best thing for her was to get to bed early. Once the house got quiet, I settled into my leather recliner in the library and....oh man! If PNM was Tom's big idea in life, then Great Powers will be his magnum opus, as it shows how all of his ideas integrate into the systemic whole. Needless to say, when I climbed into bed at 2am, the wife wanted to know why I was just coming to bed. I told her Tom Barnett had kept me up, blame him.
