While reading Mearsheimer's biography of Liddell Hart this weekend, I was struck by the conflict in the 20s and 30s between the traditionalists in the Royal Army, who wanted to see an expeditionary "SysAdmin" force optimized for the colonies, and the modernizers who believed that a mechanized force was the only response to the emerging German threat. The problem was that the modernizers were split among themselves ... many, like Liddell Hart, were viscerally opposed to any initiative that would lead to a "strong BEF" deployed for a replay of the Somme.
