But how long does the money actually stay away? If it comes back in a month, it's not really much of a punishment for a country willing to weather a little short-term pain for geopolitical gain.

But now, with the US economic fluctuations overwhelming the Russian markets, it will be very tough to tell of the war-related capital flight is a short or long term effect.

These incursions into the Gap (US into Iraq; Russia into Georgia) do seem to be very costly.

Estimate of long-term costs to the United States re: Iraq now at about $2 Trillion -- as of today?
