A bit premature about the saying goodbye to the Taiwan scenario, as the issue of Taiwan (as well as Tibet and Falun Gong) pushes some sort of irrationality button. Don't bring up it in polite conversation. This is something the central government is quite aware of ( http://www.economist.com/world/asia/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11485038&fsrc=RSS ).
Back to the post at hand: interesting, as Taiwan looks for a new economic niche. If you think the U.S. has outsourcing problems with China, look at Taiwan.
Financial services hub? Taipei is to San Francisco as Shanghai and Hong Kong is to New York City and Chicago? Trying to think of an analogy.
I could see Chinese tycoons looking to live in Taipei, especially in the cooler months: a nice, very modern Mandarin speaking city with clean air and great amenities. Not to mention having the best variety and quality of Chinese food in the world. What else? Malibu on the East Coast/Southern tip of Taiwan? Investments in Taiwanese agriculture (tea, fruit)?
