More on the reset battle

REVIEW by John Nagl: The Echo of Battle: The Army's Way of War, By Brian McAllister Linn, 320 pages, $27.95, Harvard University Press, 2007, ISBN: 0674026519, in © RUSI APRIL 2008 VOL. 153 NO. 2 pp. 82–3

Nagl reviewing Linn and exploring the all-important concept of the "reset." I wrote about this in yesterday's column.

The battle for the reset will be fierce and crucial to the future security of this country.

It will either represent an embrace or an abandonment of the world we find ourselves managing at this point in history.

In trying to get a grasp on the factors that are driving these questions/arguments, should we be using different terms?

As an example: Instead of talking about "System Administration," should we, instead, be talking about something like "Massive System Expansion?"

"System Administration" seems to imply a very limited, maintenance-like function -- consistent with maintaining the status quo, to wit: A no new players -- no new dynamics -- no need to change concept.

"Massive System Expansion," on the other hand, seems to imply incredible requirements, incredible changes and challenging, new and different dynamics (such as rapidly expanding globalization, the emergence of the BRIC, "transforming the Gap," etc.).

If we were to use terms or explanations such as "Massive System Expansion," which identify, demand and embrace the reality of the requirements at hand, then arguments re: "how to reset the military" would seem to be more easily made and more easily addressed.
