Arabs today, Americans...

ARTICLE: In Booming Gulf, Some Arab Women Find Freedom in the Skies, By KATHERINE ZOEPF, New York Times, December 21, 2008

Name that equivalent, time-capsule moment from U.S. history.

Speaking of Arabs (terrible segue, but there it is), do you have thoughts on the Israeli assault on Gaza? How does this fit into your worldview? Is Israel "Core"? Is Palestine "Gap"? Are we simply witnessing Israel properly "exporting security" to Gaza?

How does you central thesis explain or answer events in the world today?

Israel is a Core-like country that is unfortunately situated deep in the Gap. Island outposts like that typically face profound security issues, like South Africa. Locating a mansion in the ghetto does not instantly transform the neighborhood into the suburbs.

Israel and Palestine are the result of many lines drawn by outsiders. As a rule, that colonial process worked very badly, generating the bulk of the conficts still hot in the Gap.

The article mentions the movement of women into the workforce during the 1950s and 1960s, but I would contend that the kick-off point was WW2. I am a scientist, not a history buff (becoming one as I see the relevance for knowing the history of my field), so I could be wrong.

19th Century, industrial revolution? Tradition of women staying close to home starts to collapse as necessity and opportunity bring them to the big city to work jobs by themselves.
