If you're out here with the family you may want to check out the "Bay Model" over in Sausalito. It was built in the 1950s by the Army Corps of Engineers to study how the Bay ecosystem works. Its a precise scale model built 1:1000 in X and Y and 1:100 in the vertical dimension, so its in a huge warehouse and you literally walk around the Bay. Its a great learning/eco experience for kids and usually not too crowded vs. other attractions. And you can spend some time in Sausalito for the more traditional tourist experience too.
Although I hate the SF politics, I have to go back at least every 5 years . . If for no other reason, to ride the streetcars from Market to the Wharf, and to have a fresh breakfast on the Wharf, while listening to the bark of the sea lions . .
The loveliness of ParisSeems somehow sadly gayThe glory that was RomeIs of another dayI've been terribly alone andForgotten in ManhattanI'm going homeTo my city by the Bay
I left my heart in San FranciscoHigh on a hill, it calls to meTo be where little cable carsClimb halfway to the starsThe morning fogMay chill the air, I don't care
My love waits thereIn San FranciscoAbove the blue and windy seaWhen I come home to youSan FranciscoYour golden sun will shine for me
