An open call for ideas for public briefs in DC & NY in early February to support the book release

Putnam is planning to have me in DC the first half of the 9-13 Feb week and in NYC for the second half, scheduling as many media appearances as possible. A couple of big possibilities are being explored in DC, but both of the entities in question are just holding spots or contemplating without committing, so Putnam is asking me to use my network/contacts to see if I can arrange a C-SPAN-worthy venue on my own, preferring to get one or two in the hand right away.

Naturally, my first instinct is to consider the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at National Defense University, where C-SPAN has taped me twice in the past, and I'll have Jennifer look into that one, but I thought I'd toss out the issue to the readership on the chance that somebody out there has better or additional ideas.

Putnam is asking me to try to arrange a DC event either on the evening of 2/9 (Mon), the afternoon of 2/10 (Tues) or the evening of 2/11 (Wed). In New York, Putnam is suggesting possible events on the 12th (Thurs) and 13th (Friday).

If you know of good venues (think tanks, universities, X club) that can attract C-SPAN coverage, and have real contacts or are one yourself, please send an email to me (tom-at-thomaspmbarnett.com) or Jennifer (jen-at-themeritagency.com), or comment on this post.

awesome! in nyc you might want to see if the Foreign Policy Association will want to do anything. I go to as many of their events as I can. Either way, I'll go to wherever you plan on going. by then our new president's views and plans on FP should be clearer, esp if the planned G20 summit goes through, so hearing your thoughts will be interesting.

No need to suggest Politics and Prose. That's the slot being held for Tuesday night.

I hope you don't have to appear on the Colbert Report. I am a fan and enjoy the show but he manages to make authors look like fools. John Stewart is a little better but sensible discussion is still limited.

Given how challenging it can be for people to assimilate the information in a 30-45 minute brief the first time they hear it, I highly doubt a 5-10 minute interview would be an appropriate medium to try and explain the book.

The Long Island University's Homeland Security Management Institute would be a nice fit. The University was one of the first to offer an advanced program in Homeland Security management and would provide a fine venue. The university has hosted numerous speakers through their annual lecture series programs and seems like it would be a solid pairing.

More information about the program can be found at:

How about Johns Hopkins, School of Advanced International Studies near Dupont Circle?

If you can go on Colbert, do it. Best media you will get anywhere in the U.S. He doesn't make anybody look like a fool that doesn't invite it.

Come to Columbia!!! Huge population of vets for an Ivy League. Lots of people will show, and god knows we can command media attention.

I'm a big fan of the Miller Center Forum. I know, it's a hundred miles from DC in Charlottesville, but I forwarded this post to a couple people at Miller Center. You'd have a good, sharp crowd there.

i sure hope we'd take Stewart or Colbert if we could get them. just haven't been able to get an in. no, you can't explain much, but it gets people to buy books and come to the website and that's very good, too.

CSIS is always good, the Building Museum would provide excellent visuals... Daily Show would be awesome - can you post an email address where we can all send our support for him being on there?

I know it is a later time frame but how about the LA TIMES/UCLA Festival of Books in April. Always gets lots of CSPAN coverage. Recently seen Hitchens, Power, Boot, many others there. Link here:
