Middle East's youth have upside, too

YOUNG EGYPTIANS: Plugging in to democracy, BY JACKSON DIEHL, Miami Herald, Dec. 20, 2007

Again, on the Middle East's youth, recognize the upside potential as well as the highly publicized downside.

As soon as we recognize this world's strengths, the radicals jihadists are screwed as far as fundamentalism goes. But yes, expect more social conservatism as the partner of rising political freedom. It's a natural tandem, just as it is between social conservatism and globalization's spread.

Tom, can you cite a reference about historyguy99's concept. I think he's correct and I'd like to research this perspective more. These social conservatives seem to ignore the reality that our competitors in China and India do not waste their time on such debates. They just churn out scientists and engineers.

Robert, are you thinking there's a contradiction between aiming to unleash the ME youth (conservatism and all) and cranking out lots of scientists and engineers?

Robert,I can't take credit for the concept. I only get credit for sending Tom the article. The comments are Tom's.
