Waterboarding in the age of TR

ARTICLE: FBI, CIA Debate Significance of Terror Suspect, By Dan Eggen and Walter Pincus, Washington Post, December 18, 2007; Page A01

Finished Morris's brilliant 2 vol treatment of TR (why no movie? Although I hear Scorsese making first one with Leo) and noticed waterboarding (invented in Inquisition) was used by U.S. troops in Philippines at that time--and condemned popularly then too.

The Philippines war is probably the best historical antecedent to the current Iraq war. Then, as in Iraq, the U.S. swiftly conquered the country and removed its extant regime. U.S. casualties in the invasion were less than 100. There then followed a protracted insurgency during the occupation in which U.S. casualties numbered in the thousands. To this day there are still separatists in the Philippines waging terrorist war.

There was a Russian commander on the Eastern Front in WWII. He had a system for interrogation of German prisoners called "Three two". Here is how it worked. You bring three prisoners into a room. You immediately shoot one. Then you ask questions of the remaining two. (Note:This system is not approved by the FBI)

Max Boot has a fair amount of info on the U.S. fight against Philippines insurgency under Aguinaldo in his The Savage wars of Peace.
