Explaining Enterra

POST: Mobile Phone Software and Standards

For those of you struggling to figure out what exactly it is Enterra does (a constant challenge we face in interacting with people, who, like the three blind guys with the elephant, always want to toss us into various recognizable categories), this post from Steve is another brick in that wall of analogies. metaphors, etc. that we employ.

Is it a bitch to market something so complex to explain? No, actually, it's a great mental exercise.

Great! I get it. Networks. Metcalfe's Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metcalf%27s_law). Connectivity Rules! =)

Sadly, neither Steve nor Tom gets it. There is a perfectly good international mobile standard: it's called GSM. And with 2 billion subscriber lines, it's won. The war is over. The initial upgrade path will be UMTS, then UMTS HSPA, then either LTE or WiMAX.

Now let's all give thanks that the Congressman From Qualcomm, Darrell Issa, didn't get his way and force the Iraqis to have non-connective, non-roaming CDMA kit.

This is a regular problem here; Barnett gets the importance of global standards, but really struggles to realise they apply to the US.
