Give Mia some credit

ARTICLE: China to Send Military Unit to Darfur, By Edward Cody, Washington Post, May 8, 2007

China stepping up. This is so much better than shaming Beijing into withdrawal. we want them to show responsibility on the ground, not disengage or reduce Sudan's meager current connectivity to the global economy.

That's the best way to transform the "genocide Olympics" (Western, do-nothing, know-nothing hypocisy at it's worst) into something better--like China-the-emerging-SysAdmin/peacekeeping-force-of-globalization ("We own our connectivity").

What is our military really doing to encourage this? What is our government doing? Virtually nothing.

So yeah, Mia Farrow gets more credit on this one than talking-point Condi does.

Thanks to Chris Mewett for sending this.

Tom,

Before you go on about "talking point Condi" again, please tell me why it's always our responsibility to deal with Darfur. The Europeans are just as wealthy as we are, have plenty of airlift, and can do the damn job. For their part, it appears that the Chinese are as rich as Croesus, and are stepping up as responsible players.

"Talking Point" Condi was speaking to this genocide two years ago when she first visited that place, long before Hollywood started making Hip and Aware Commercials about Darfur ("Call President Bush-Tell Him to Do Something!"), but Condi (and thus, Bush) didn't fall for the Sucker's Play of sending in relief troops, like the Europeans and the Asians wanted us too. Smart girl, that Condi. You can have Mia.

After all, if the Europeans didn't want to send troops to help out in Anbar, the least they could do is pacify Darfur, don't you think? Methinks Condi came to that conclusion a long time ago.

1. Have you read Levy's article at TNR on Sudan?

2. Beijing has not responded to questions about the arms it is giving the Sudanese government. Is this latest announcement just BS to make others shut up about its support for Sudan?

too late, section9. he's already gone on about it again. it's his weblog, remember?

you've eviscerated your own argument in word choice: Condi spoke, visited, didn't fall, and concluded. what did she *do*?
