It's gold, the best article on how the ground forces are changing, adapting, and learning from their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan under the leadership of the likes of Mattis, Wallace, and Petraeus
After reading the piece, all you want to say is: Mattis, You da man!
Great article. You get energized just reading about these three and what they are trying to do to help the troops. Where is that energy and vitality on the Joint Staff and at the COCOMs? Lots of good work at both places, but it seems awful peaceful in some of these places, without much sense of urgeny. Maybe these are the folks with Lawrence's "downtime" thinking the next original thoughts! My only dissappointment came at the end of the article, when it seemed to just stop. I looked to see if I had missed a page on the printer. I hoped for a Barnett free-for-all on how to take the lessons from these three and utilize them for the New Map and Sysadmin world you espouse. Perhaps in book # 3! Thanks for work. Dave Cheney
Mark and I both struggled on the end. Always tempting to insert myself in a piece like this, but it wasn't my piece (i.e., not an essay) but reporting, so resisting that temptation was important.
I am learning the difference between my pieces and my reporting.
