ARTICLE: How Iran's nuke quest began, by Amir Taheri, New York Post, October 5, 2006.

From TM Lutas, reminding us that while Iran is rancidly authoritarian, it is not without internal politics.

And yeah, I want a dialogue going with a regime exhibiting that much internal play--for intell reasons alone.

Taheri is a right wing ideologue who has been known to fabricate info and quotes.

Iran had been pursuing a nuclear capability on and off since the Shah. The letter suggests that Khomeini made a bitter peace with Iraq because he didn't want to attempt to acquire the nuclear weapons that might have allowed Iran to prevail.
