How-green-was-my-valley photos of China after the industrialization onslaught. Sad, but hardly unique. The West did all the same sorts of damage to itself. Then it got rich and started caring about its environment. China will do the same, but it will be an even uglier journey than our own. America in 1900 suffered all the same ills. The difference: same geographic spread (roughly 9 and a half million square kilometers), but something like one-18th the population that China has today (75m v 1.35b). (Thanks: Jim)
