POST: Resisting Black And White, By Andrew Sullivan, The Daily Dish, 02 Mar 2009
This is a great piece by Cohen and I second Andrew's take.
We are getting a big-time sales push on military strikes against Tehran from Israel and its U.S. supporters, so demonization is the order of the day.
I find all this to be a huge sideshow to the real struggle in the region: Shia Iran versus the Sunni House of Saud. Israel is merely a tactical instrument for Tehran in its strategic approach to the Saudis and the Arab world in general.
That's not to say Israel's fears aren't warranted. It's just to say that America needs to worry about its own strategic interests in the region, which are not identical to Israel's fears (and frankly, the worst expressions of this come not from Israel, which is exceedingly strategic in its thinking, by and large, and highly realistic, but from its rather hysterical supporters over here--a common dynamic among ex-pats and co-religionists/ethnics in American politics {like the Irish-American community WRT the IRA way back when}).
So keep your head and objectivity on this one, and you will be called many foul names, just like Cohen is now.
