Deep Reads: "Gone with the Wind"

An easy book to cite, but it’s typically forgotten in favor of the all-time classic movie.  It is definitely worth losing yourself in.

I did during my daughter Emily’s long cancer fight in the 1990s, and I became a huge fan of Scarlett’s ability to compartmentalize her worries from one day to the next. There were many days in that struggle when I said to myself, “Oh, I can’t worry about that anymore today or I’ll go crazy.  I’ll just think about that tomorrow.”

I recall just now because we're taking a mini-family vacation in the Atlanta area.

Just recently finshed The Road. Interested in trying Gone With the Wind next. Currently finishing Seven Pillars of Wisdom [A Triumph] by T.E. Lawrence. Slow read at first, very surprisingly similar to the move as it speeds up. Certainly a strange mix of reading this summer.

Tom,

From a home town Atlanta boy, a few suggestions.

Hit a chili and onion rings from the Varsity. Worlds largest drive in.

Go to the Dwarf House in Hapeville, Ga. Original home of Chic-fil-a. Get a slice of lemon pie.

Take the kids to the Wrens Nest. Home of Joel Chandler Harris.

Don'r miss Stone Mountain. Carving rivals Mt. Rushmore.

Go see the Little White House in Warm Springs, Ga. Where FDR died.

Have a great vacation!
